Obituary for George Ernest Long, Sr.

George Ernest Long (90) passed away December 11, 2021 at Masonicare in Wallingford, CT. He was born March 5, 1931 in Middletown, NY to his parents, Gladys (Bower) and Albert Douglas Long. He moved to Hartford, CT as a child and lived in the Hartford area for most of his life.

George earned an Associate’s degree in Animal Husbandry from the University of Connecticut. George was an Army Korean War veteran and was stationed in South Korea. Upon returning home from the war, he married and settled in Hartford. He was employed as a Supervisor by Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Co. He was a past treasurer and past member of the Prudential Committee of South Congregational Church. He also held several leadership positions in BSA Troop 2 and enjoyed many camping trips with the guys.
George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet (Griffin) Long in 2011, with whom he spent 55 years. He joins her in heaven in time for the 66th anniversary of their wedding on New Year’s Eve.

He was a member of Wyllys-St. Johns Masonic Lodge #4, was past master of Wyllys Lodge, and was also a member of Sphinx Temple Shriners. He was a talented bagpiper who marched in many parades.
He loved crafting, and was a master in leather carving, wood carving, and sketching. He created beautiful works of art, which will be forever treasured by his family members.

He leaves behind his son, George E. Long, Jr. (wife Debbie) and his daughter Susan Long Ray (husband Tom); four grandchildren, Benjamin Long, Jennifer Hummel, Thomas Ray, IV and Dr. Sarah Ray; one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Hummel, and one step great-grandson, Marc Marshall.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on December 20, 2021 at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06110. Calling hour will be prior to the service beginning at 12:00 pm. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please make a donation in George’s name to Shriners Hospitals for Children (www.shrinerschildren.org).
