Obituary for George Joseph Cruz

George J. Cruz, 79, of Granby, director and founder of the San Juan Center Sports in Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He leaves his wife, Carol (DeDominicis) Cruz; his daughters, Aurelia and Courtney; his granddaughter, Brooklynn; his grandsons, Brandon, Carter and Benny; his brothers Amado and Ray; his sister Terry and many nieces and nephews. He was a well-known monarch in the CT area. Being the professional boxer-trainer, he instilled positive reinforcement in all those whose lives he touched. He trained his boxers hard and led them to become world champions. He also had a love for music and was one of the best singers and entertainers. He formed many groups, performing throughout all of CT, Apollo Theatre and Foxwoods. As a young man he won many singing and dancing contests. He always thought big and as a result made big things happen. One of the many dear friends, Jan Palais said it the best, “George was bigger than life.” He would always say, “Do the right thing.”

George touched an enormous number of people in his life. He had an infectious love for his family; always telling a joke; always with a smile, no matter what; always positive. He will be missed and loved by his wife, daughters and grandchildren for eternity.

In the end, George was the real fighter and champion.
