Frederick “Fred” A. Alciati, 88, of Farmington, beloved husband for 59 years of Barbara (DeGregorio) Alciati, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 3, 2023 at UCONN John Dempsey Hospital. Fred was born on August 17, 1934 and grew up in Torrington, the son of the late Silvio and Columba (Parducci) Alciati. Fred graduated from Torrington High School and went on to serve his country with the Marines from 1954, until the time of his honorable discharge in 1956. While in the Marines, Fred was stationed in Morocco and the U.S. Embassy in London and celebrated his twenty-first birthday at the Rock of Gibraltar. Fred learned the glass trade in Torrington at Union Glass. As a Union Glazier, Fred moved to Hartford where he worked for both State Glass and City Glass. Then he worked his way cross-country doing jobs in cities from New York, NY to Los Angeles, CA. One of his many notable jobs was working on the landmark US Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel in Colorado Springs, CO. In 1970, Fred opened American Glass Company with his wife in Newington, CT where they grew the business for 43 years until he retired at 79. During that time, Fred taught many the glazing trade and made cherished life-long friends in the glass and construction fields. A resident of Farmington for the past 57 years, Fred enjoyed maintaining the house he built, traveling with his family, celebrating holidays and all good food. Fred had been a UNICO member for many years and was a die-hard UCONN men’s and women’s basketball fan.
Fred is survived by his wife Barbara; his daughter Diane Blake and her husband Todd of Marin County, CA, his daughter Donna McGonigal and her husband Sean of Montclair, NJ and his son David Alciati of Farmington, CT. He was affectionately known as Papa to his grandchildren; Charlotte and Henry Blake and Jack and Cole McGonigal of whom he was so proud. Fred also leaves many dearly loved nieces and nephews and their families, as well as many loyal friends. Fred was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Julia Fierravanti and her husband Rocco, Mary Thomas and her husband Cliff, and brother Joseph Alciati and his wife Anna Marie.
Visiting hours will be Thursday, May 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 12, at the Church of St. Patrick, 110 Main Street, Farmington at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private.
