Obituary for Elizabeth Mary (Rothauser) Singer

Elizabeth Mary (Rothauser) Singer, 98, transitioned on September 5, 2023, at Brookdale of West Hartford. She was the daughter of the late Emery and Elizabeth Rothauser and the wife of the late Frederick Arthur Singer. A proud graduate of Hartford High and the Morse School of Business, Betty worked for the Arthur Nielsen Company and later for 27 years as part of the Group Pension division of Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford and Middletown. In retirement she traveled to many places including Banff, Istanbul, Croatia, Mexico, Ireland, England, Spain, and Morocco with her brother Henry or her friend Rose Baer. She was a fierce UConn Women’s Basketball fan and loved watching the games, coaching them and cheering them on from her recliner at home. She was always ready with a crochet hook to create a baby blanket, bookmark, potholder, plush toy, or anything else needed by a friend, family member, classroom, or the church fair. As a grandmother, she was known as “Swinger” and would do anything necessary to help or entertain. Family parties to celebrate holidays or birthdays would find Swinger cleaning and cooking for whoever might arrive; maybe chicken paprikash or those watermelon salads. She would make her way to Nevada to surprise a grandson for his birthday. She would go on vacation with a granddaughter and explore the Southwest. She would open her house as a safe haven for any grandchild. Her life was one of giving, loving, cooking and cleaning.

Elizabeth leaves to mourn her; her daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Jonathan Schwartz of Wilmot, NH, Gail and Brian Nicholson of Medford, OR; her six grandchildren, Rebecca Schwartz, Andrew (Karie) Schwartz, Rachel (David) Palmer, Timothy (Sandra) Nicholson, Caleb (Priscilla) Nicholson, and Micah Nicholson; her seven great-grandchildren, Audrey, Dax, Sam, James, Luke, Ruby, and Oscar, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her friends, especially Barbara Meier. Many thanks to the wonderful Ed Czapla, Claire Lombard, Amy’s Angels, Vinette Downer, and the extraordinary staff of Brookdale of West Hartford for their care and ongoing support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023, at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Donations in Elizabeth’s name can be made to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, CT, St. Mark the Evangelist Church in West Hartford, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. The Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, has care of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
