Obituary for Edwin L. Caldwell

Edwin L. Caldwell, 90, of Wethersfield, entered eternal life on April 6, 2014. He was born in Hannibal, Missouri, grew up in Waco, Texas, and later graduated from Baylor University there. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, and returned to Baylor to teach, eventually serving as Chair of the department. Ed arrived in Hartford in 1965 to become Vice President and Chief Economist at the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut School of Business, and was active in the Hartford Area Business Economists, serving as President in 1980 and 1981. For more than twenty-five years, he was one of the most prominent and respected analysts of economic matters in the state. Following his retirement, he was one of the founding editors of The Connecticut Economy, a quarterly journal published by the University of Connecticut. He leaves his son, Carter, several nieces and nephews, and his companion, Vicki Lombardi. His family would like to give special thanks to all the caregivers at Ellis Manor for their kindness and concern over the last year.
There will be a celebration of Ed’s life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., in West Hartford. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.
