Edward R. McGuiness, 94, beloved husband of Catherine (Jones) McGuiness, died peacefully on May 24, 2019, at Saint Francis Hospital. Born and raised in New Britain, son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Erwin) McGuiness, Ed entered the service after graduating from New Britain High School in 1943. He was a proud World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force. While stationed in England, Ed flew on 27 bombing missions over Germany aboard a B-17 bomber, where he served as a radio operator and waist gunner. After the war Ed returned home to New Britain and joined Steamfitters' Local 218 (now Local 777 Plumbers & Pipefitters), where he was a dedicated union member for 70 years. Ed and Kate married in 1955 and lived in New Britain for a few years before settling in Newington where they raised their family. They were also summer residents of Lake Hayward for more than 50 years. In his retirement Ed enjoyed spending winters in Florida and Arizona. Ed's life was greatly enriched by his eight grandchildren. He was proud of each one for their accomplishments in school, sports and other activities, and enjoyed every moment with them. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Ed is survived by his four children and their spouses, Ann McGuiness and William "Chip" Reynolds of Selkirk, NY; Patrick and Nancy (Borton) McGuiness of Glastonbury; Mary Kate (McGuiness) and Matthew Hallisey of Glastonbury; and Timothy McGuiness of Old Lyme; and his eight loving grandchildren, Nora and Nicholas Reynolds; Ian and Brendan McGuiness; Maeve, Jack and Colin Hallisey; and Eamonn McGuiness. Ed also leaves his brother John McGuiness and his sister Margaret (McGuiness) DiPietro, both of Vero Beach, FL, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by his three brothers, Thomas, Philip and Joseph McGuiness; his two sisters, Mary (McGuiness) Peterson and Alice (McGuiness) Kuskey; and his nephew, William Peterson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, in St. Mary Church, 626 Willard Ave., Newington. Burial with military honors will follow in West Meadow Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford.
