Obituary for Dr. Edgar Faustino Salas

Dr. Edgar Faustino Salas, age 66, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday March 6, 2021, at Hartford Hospital located in Connecticut. Edgar was born February 15, 1955 in Lima, Peru to Florencio and Lucila Salas. He was one of seven siblings. Edgar is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Maria Laura (Laly) Salas, his two children, son, Dr. Edgar Salas and his wife Alicia Sobczynski; daughter Marilyn Tice and her husband David Tice, and two grandchildren Ethan James Salas and Madilyn Claire Tice.

From a young age, Edgar had a drive and attraction to medicine. He finished second in his high school class of over 500 students and was awarded a full scholarship to his university. Edgar followed and achieved his dream of becoming a Medical Doctor and graduated from the Universidad National de San Marcos in Peru in 1984. He continued his medical career and practiced Urology as a surgeon for years. He was very happy to be able to live his dream to help and treat patients as a Physician.

He moved to the United States with his wife and two children in 1988, where they established their permanent residence in West Hartford, Connecticut. Edgar continued his passion for medicine and graduated nursing school as a Registered Nurse, starting his career at Hartford Hospital in 1988. He then took his expertise to the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Rocky Hill for nine years. In 2000 he began work, where he would later retire, at the University of Connecticut Health Center after 20 years. During his time at UConn Health Center, he was recognized with one of the most prestigious nursing awards, the Nightingale Award, in 2010. In 2019, Edgar was reunited with his fellow classmates from medical school for a 35 year reunion where he renewed his Hippocratic Oath as a Physician. It brought him great joy and honor to relive memories and spend time with his friends and partners after all those years. He retired in March 2020 and found his true passion in life, which was being the most dedicated grandfather (Papito) to his two grandchildren.

In Edgar’s free time he would always have an open book in his hand whether it be a medical journal, a historical biography, or a fictional novel. He was always on top of the curve with the most up to date advances in medicine. Those who had the pleasure of sitting and talking to him know, he would always take the time to thoroughly explain any medical question/condition that may arise. He would do anything in his power to help his loved ones and his family always reached out to him first for every little headache, cough or sore throat.

When he wasn’t talking or teaching medicine, he enjoyed an ice cold Cristal beer in a tall glass, maintaining his meticulous lawn, swimming, and spending time with family. Edgar was also an avid New York Yankees and UCONN Huskies Fan. In his quiet time, he would enjoy playing a game of Chess, watching TV shows and movies, or just being in the company of his family. He loved learning and working with new technology and gadgets.

Aside from his devotion to medicine, he was a beloved husband, father, friend, educator, and life long learner. Becoming a grandfather was one of the proudest and joyous moments of his life. Edgar will be missed by many beloved family members and friends. A public Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday March 12 at 11 A.M. at Saint Brigid Church located at 1088 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06110. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, West Hartford. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
