Obituary for Doris Ockajik

Doris Ockajik, 90, passed away May 22, 2022 at UConn Hospital in Farmington, Connecticut with her daughter Susan Ockajik by her side. Doris was born September 4, 1931 in Watertown, New York, daughter of the late Marian and Percy Cosselman. She lived in Brownville, New York graduating in 1948 from Brownville-Glen Park Central School as Salutatorian and President of her high school class. Doris received a Bachelor's degree in Education from Potsdam College in 1952 and was a member of Phi Kappa Pi sorority.

Following college graduation, Doris taught elementary school in Massapequa, New York on Long Island. It was in Hempstead, New York where Doris met her husband Steve, who predeceased her in 2009, while he was in the Air Force and stationed at Mitchell Air Force base. Doris and Steve married in Brownville in 1953 and moved to Ohio the same year. Four years were spent in Wilmington, Ohio while Steve received his college degree. They settled in Willoughby, Ohio with Doris primarily teaching 4th grade for most of her career and Steve taught in the Willoughby schools as well until 1984 when they retired at the same time.

Doris enjoyed summers in Dexter, New York on Pillar Point, Lake Ontario at the cottage her father built the summer before she was born. Many friends and family visited over the years which resulted in good times and lifelong memories. Swimming, water skiing, boating and fishing were activities Doris enjoyed at the lake. Later in life Doris took up golf which included golf leagues at the local Rustic golf course in Dexter. Doris also loved to travel and was able to spend time in Florida during many winters, traveled to Hawaii and visited other interesting places.

Doris is known for her kind and compassionate nature seeing the good in people. As a Presbyterian church member, Doris was a participant in various church groups and a volunteer. Spending time and enjoying activities with friends and family made Doris the happiest throughout her life. Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays included many people at her home and cooking started well in advance to have special dishes and desserts everyone loved and looked forward to each year as a tradition.

Survivors include son Steven Ockajik of Mentor, Ohio and daughter Susan Ockajik of Farmington, Connecticut, loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and long-time friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Doris was preceded in death by brothers Walter Cosselman and Leon Cosselman and infant sister Jean Cosselman.

A graveside service will be held at Brownville, New York cemetery on State Route 12E, Friday, August 5th, at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.
