Obituary for Donald "Don" C. Fisher

Donald “Don” Charles Fisher, 93, of Enfield, husband of the late Dolores (Sullivan) Fisher, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 29, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Don is survived by his three children, Chuck Fisher and his wife Barbara of West Hartford, Kim Fisher of Enfield and Donna Fisher of Broad Brook; his three siblings, Gerald Fisher of Jacksonville, FL, Charles Fisher of Glastonbury, CT (aka Don's best friend and "partner in crime and antics") and Marilyn Camillo and the late Donald Camillo of Spring Hill, FL; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Don also leaves his longtime companion, Ruth Shapiro of West Hartford.

Don was born in Hartford on March 3, 1929 and was the devoted son to the late Charles and Helen (Shea) Fisher. He attended Bulkeley High School until enlisting in the Navy. Don served in the Navy for six years and later graduated from the University of Hartford's Ward School of Electronics.

Don's love of automobiles permeated his career beginning with opening Fisher's Texaco in Glastonbury during the 1960's, to working over 20 years as a Fleet Emissions Inspector for the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, retiring in 2003 at age 74.

Don's pastimes included mechanics, vehicle restoration especially Corvairs, motorcycling, aviation, dancing and vacationing at the shoreline. What he loved most of all though was spending time with his family, friends and just being with people. Everyone that met Don remembered him as a fun-loving man who wouldn't say an unkind word or make an unkind gesture toward anyone.

While vacationing in Westbrook in recent years, Don was approached by a State of CT employee who recognized him from a photo and wanted to meet "the legend from Motor Vehicles" that he had heard so much about. Don was a person who wasn't easily forgotten.

Don's love and devotion to his family never waivered. He continued the love and commitment his wife Dolores had shown the entire family and he kept the promises he had made to her. Dolores was the love of his life, and her untimely passing left a huge hole in his heart.

Don tried never to dwell on sadness or negativity. One of his mottos for a good life simply put, "If you wake up and you feel good, it's going to be a great day!" As of December 29, 2022 Dad, there will be no more "great days" only one final "good night." Rest easy Dad. Our hearts are forever broken. We love you and will miss you always, until the day that we are all together again.

Relatives and friends are invited to services at the Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford on Saturday, January 7, 2023.
