Obituary for Conrad Delano Whitney

Conrad Delano Whitney, age 93, passed away on February 14, 2022 (Valentine’s Day) surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. Conrad was the 2nd son of Theodore Whitney and Grace Mooney Whitney and brother to Theodore (Ted) Whitney. He was born on October 17, 1928 and grew up in West Hartford, graduating from the old William Hall High School in 1947.

He attended Norwich University in Northfield, VT, the US Army War College and the Command and General Staff College. Upon graduation, he became a 2nd Lieutenant-Armor US Army.

In June of 1951, Conrad married the love of his life, Barbara Foley and with a blink of an eye, Conrad entered active duty in September. He served with the 1st Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas until October 1952 when he was deployed to Korea serving as an Advisor to the Republic of Korea Tank Company until June of 1953. In August of that year, he returned to civilian life serving in the CT National Guard and US Army Reserve where he was a mentor to many soldiers for the next 28 years, retiring in 1981 as Colonel, US Army after 30 years of service.

In 1953 Conrad joined Aetna Life and Casualty and after 37 years of service, retired as an officer of the Employee Benefits Division. He had an amazing career at Aetna but decided to retire to spend more time with his wife Barbara and his grandchildren. He maintained many friendships with his Aetna colleagues after retirement.

Conrad was an outdoorsman who loved skiing and was active in the Springfield Ski Club in Blandford, MA taking his three children skiing every weekend. He also enjoyed the challenges of Stowe, VT, skiing well into his 70’s. He was an avid runner and loved fly fishing for Steelhead in upstate New York. He also enjoyed a good round of golf, especially with his grandsons, playing his last round with them on Father’s Day 2021. He was President of the Newington Swim Club, a Little League Coach and an Indian Guide Leader. Conrad had the honor of being the Grand Marshall for the Newington Memorial Day Parade in 2017, riding in an Army Jeep waving to the crowd. It was a highlight to be chosen and he cherished the opportunity to once again wear his Army Dress Blues with his medals. In 2006, the Conrad D. Whitney Scholarship fund for Military Excellence was established in his honor at Norwich University and in 2010 he established the Barbara and Marilyn Whitney Scholarship Fund at Norwich University to help students achieve their goals and be commissioned into the Armed Forces.

After Barbara passed way in 1999, he reconnected with a longtime friend and Aetna retiree, Marilyn Conley. They fell in love and married in 2002. Conrad and Marilyn loved to travel and visited many countries, as well as enjoying river cruises throughout Europe. Ireland was one of their favorite countries, visiting more than 10 times. For 17 years they wintered in Myrtle Beach, where they maintained wonderful friendships.

Conrad is survived by his three children: Patricia Burns (James) of Strongsville, OH, Brian Whitney (Paula) of West Hartford, CT, John Whitney (Carrie-Lynn) of Walland, TN; six grandchildren, Matthew Whitney (Sarah) of West Hartford, Brian Michael Whitney of West Hartford, Conor Whitney (Marissa) of West Hartford, Morgan Whitney of West Hartford, Allison Burns and her longtime boyfriend, Bryan McCauley, and Matt Burns of Cleveland, OH; three great granddaughters Julia, Faye and Samantha; and his niece, Eve Lynn Loftis (Steven).
