Obituary for Barbara Jean Smith (Woodburn)

Barbara passed away on November 15, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born on June 20, 1932 in Haverhill, MA and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1950. While in high school she played the organ at her church. She moved to Hartford after graduating high school to attend Hartford Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her certification as a registered nurse in 1953. She worked at Hartford Hospital in the pediatric surgery, the polio unit, and psychiatric unit until her third child was born in 1961. Barbara was married for 60 years to Edmund T. Smith, also originally from Haverhill, MA. They lived their married life in Connecticut, primarily in West Hartford. They had a wonderful marriage and after their children were grown they traveled extensively around the United States, Canada, and Europe. She leaves behind her husband, Edmund Smith, their three children, Edmund Smith Jr. of Bloomfield and his wife Laura, Maureen Starr of Avon and her companion Michael Steele, Kathleen Korzeb of Ellington and her husband Michael, six grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Smith, Tyler and Cameron Starr, Meghan and Austin Maniatis. She also leaves behind two great grandchildren, Sierra Rapoport and Ayden Smith. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Mary and the many individuals who provided care and compassion for Barbara over the years. They also want to thank her excellent hospice team. A quote she left for all of us. “I have been blessed all through life by the association with people I have loved and in turn who loved and cared for me. No one knows what the future holds but by placing my future in the hands of God and my loved ones I am confident in the future.” She is dearly missed by her family and friends.
The Funeral Service for Barbara will be Thursday, (November 19), 11:00 am the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. Burial will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Visitation will be prior to the funeral service from 9:30 - 11:00 am at the funeral home.
