Obituary for Amelia (Bekiesz) O'Brien

Amelia (Bekiesz) O’Brien, aka Amy, Meech, Bobcia, Ciocia, Meecha, 91, of West Hartford, formerly of Hartford, passed peacefully on April 4, 2024, with her children by her side.

Amelia was the loving mother of seven children, Katie O’Brien of NC, Judy O’Brien of SC, Michael O’Brien and his wife Sheri of Bristol, Patty (Beyer) O’Brien of West Hartford, Danny O’Brien of West Hartford, James O’Brien of Deep River, Amy O’Brien of Avon, and her baby sister Dolores Santomeno of Newington. Amelia was predeceased by her sister, Paula Bekiesz of NJ and her brother, William Bekiesz of Long Island, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Amelia was a cherished Bobcia and Grandmother to Tiffany (LaRosa) and her husband Mykel, Michael Beyer and his fiancée Margaret Zelinski, Valerie (Beyer) Shafer and her husband Ben, John Paul and Peter Markese, Tommy, Darren, Matthew, Brianna, and Jason O’Brien of Deep River, and Jayden O’Brien of Florida.

Amelia treasured beyond measure every moment spent with her grandchildren, loving every moment they camped under her dining room table, their time spent at zoos and parks, and their sneaking “just a tiny piece” of a sweet treat, particularly coffee cake and danish. Family was everything to her.  She more than cherished the moments spent surrounded by her family, her loved ones, whether it was enjoying family dinners together, taking leisurely strolls reminiscing in her favorite place, Elizabeth Park, looking at the flowers, butterflies and talking about her Dad, or simply running errands together. Amelia was loved and known as “Mom" and "Ma” to many in the neighborhood; the neighborhood she grew up and raised her children in. Her home was a safe house for many. All were welcome, as long as they were respectful.

Amelia worked as a Paraprofessional in the Hartford school system for many years, where she loved and treated every child as her own. After school she jumped on a bus to Hartford Hospital where she worked as a telephone operator/communication.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 10am, in St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Hartford, followed by burial in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.
