Obituary for Alfredo Rodriguez

Alfredo Rodriguez, 76, of Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on December 17, 2022.

Alfredo was born August 18, 1946 in Guanica, Puerto Rico to Alfredo Rodriguez, Sr. and Cielo Torres. He moved with his mother to Connecticut between the ages of eight and nine, becoming a lifelong resident of the state. He attended New Britain Senior High School and the University of Connecticut, and went on to earn two master’s degrees. He worked his way up from shining shoes, picking tobacco, and working in a foundry, to a long career as an assistant in state and city government, practicing his love for politics, history, progressive values, and commitment to civic service.

He was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's at 29 years old while studying at Washington State University, a condition that he bravely faced for the rest of his life. Despite or perhaps in spite of his condition, he lived a life full of adventure and activity, including highlights like hitchhiking across the country and attending Woodstock, and hobbies such as hiking, rifle and bow hunting, and fishing.

He was a loving husband for 35 years to Luisa Rivera (64), a devoted father to Yanira M. Rodriguez (42), Jose I. Rivera (41), Amarillys Rodriguez (33) and Melissa Rodriguez (33), and a doting grandfather to Ethan, Sofia, Mason, and Jacob. In addition, he is survived by several brothers and sisters and a large extended family. He imparted us with his work ethic, determination, curiosity, commitment to social justice and civic engagement, and love for family. He was also a loyal and supportive friend that lent a helping hand to many. His family is comforted that he passed in peace and will cherish his memory.

A wake and memorial service will be Tuesday, (December 27) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
